Welcome

Quarrying in Kerala began in the 1970s using traditional methods such as hand drilling and gunpowder. Over the years, technological advancements and the growing construction sector increased the demand for quarry products and crushed sand, especially after the ban on river sand mining.

At the same time, concerns over environmental protection and sustainable use of natural resources led to the introduction of stricter regulations.

This website has been launched as part of that initiative to enable companies to upload and showcase the environmental protection measures adopted at their quarrying and crushing units.

Overview

United Granites and metals, popularly known as “Kochuparambil Granites” is a company engaged in the mining of Granite Building stone at Manakkad village. The mining activities are carried out in the land belonging to the company and leased from friends and relatives at vazhithala, Idukki dist, Kerala to the extent of nearly 9.88 hectares minable area.

The quarrying activities started way back in 1998 with a smaller area. Additional properties were purchased and leased from relatives and friends. United Granites and Metals has been granted a lease valid till 2030 and obtained EC (Environment Clearance). Company secured all the required permissions from the concerned Government departments and is being renewed periodically.

We are adopting drilling and blasting of small diameter shallow holes to extract the granite boulders.NONEL is used to reduce ground vibration due to blasting. These boulders are broken to smaller size using rock breakers and later fed into Crushing plants, a continuous process system with crushers, screens and conveyors. The products are different sizes of aggregates, M sand and P sand. We use latest technology classifiers for washing and classifying sand. So very good quality sands are delivered to customers.

Products and Quality

Premium Quality of our company

Aggregate mining is mainly for supplying construction industry. Different sizes of aggregates and sand are used for road construction, buildings, bridges, railways, dams etc. Boulders are used in backwater protection wall in Port construction. Washed M Sand and P Sand
Brand Identity

Our crushing plant features advanced technology from Metso, including a VSI Crusher Barmac 9100SE series with dual drive, supported by Jaw Crusher C130 and Cone Crusher Nordberg HP4. The rock-on-rock crushing process produces high-quality, cubical aggregates and manufactured sand ideal for concrete and bitumen applications. The sand produced is further processed through classifiers to remove clay and ultra-fine particles below 75 microns. The system separates the material into P Sand and M Sand, both offering quality standards comparable to natural river sand.

Aggregates
Brand Identity

Crushed aggregates of 5-8mm, 8-16mm, 16-30mm etc are stored in Bins (boxes). These can be easily poured into tipper trucks placed below. Products never get mixed up and the customer is ensured of the size offered.

The water used in washing the sand will be in the form of silt after washing. This silt is stored in silt settling tanks. This silt is filtered to separate the sand content to separate clean water. This water is stored in Rain water harvesting ponds and reused for water sprinkling in the quarry for dust suppression.

Safety and Environment

Safety First, Environment Always

Safety of men, machinery and quarry itself is of prime importance in any mining industry. Qualified certificate holders are appointed to ensure this. Employees are provided with safety gadgets viz Safety Shoes, Helmets, Face mask, Ear muffs etc. Water is sprinkled before drilling and again before blasting. Roads are always sprinkled with water.

An Environment cell is formed under the leadership of the General Manager (who reports to MD). The cell meets once in 3 months to review progress of environment protection programmes. The committee also decides on all future programmes . All discussions are recorded and signed by all members. Trees are planted all around the quarry to prevent dust from going out of the quarry. Additionally mist system of water sprinkling is installed to form a water curtain to prevent any dust escaping from quarry. All tree plantation activities are monitored by the Environment Monitoring Cell.
